Are my files uploaded?
No. Your browser decodes the M4A and encodes the MP3 on your device. The only files your browser downloads are this page and its three scripts, all from this site.
Do I need an account to download?
No. There is no sign-up or login on this site. The download button saves the converted file straight from your browser.
Which bitrates and sample rates can I choose?
MP3 at 128, 160, 192, 256 or 320 kbps, at 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz. WAV is 16-bit at the same two sample rates. Mono files stay mono and stereo files stay stereo. Files with more than two channels are mixed down to stereo.
Which M4A files work?
M4A files with AAC audio. Apple Lossless (ALAC) M4A files did not decode in the Chromium browser we tested with. If your browser can't decode a file, the page tells you.
Does converting M4A to MP3 lose quality?
AAC and MP3 are both lossy formats, so converting from one to the other can't add back detail that was already removed. A higher bitrate keeps more of what is left, and gives a larger file.
Are song titles and cover art kept?
No. The MP3 contains the audio only. Title, artist and cover art from the M4A are not copied.
Why is the MP3 a little longer than the M4A?
MP3 encoding pads the audio to whole frames, so the MP3 comes out a few hundredths of a second longer. WAV keeps the exact length.
Is there a limit on file size or number of files?
This page sets none, but your device does. Each file is decoded into memory while it converts. On our test computer, with about 3 GB of free memory, a 45-minute M4A converted and a 60-minute M4A crashed the browser tab while decoding. Converting takes time too: a 10-minute file took about a minute there. Files are converted one after another.
